Allegretta Grabs First Podium of the Year at VIR

Vinnie Allegretta scored his first podium finish with a second place at Virginia International Raceway. The runner up drive followed the best qualifying result for the TA Sights and Sounds #41 Corvette of his rookie season. A second place, front row start. Second place points and bonus points for qualifying 2nd pushes Allegretta into the top 10 in series championship points. VIR was the third race for Allegretta’s new race car. Vinnie scored a 6th in its debut at Mid Ohio and then followed that with a 4th at Road America. The car’s performance continued to improve at VIR with a second place run that was better than it looked. In turn 1 of the opening lap of the race Allegretta slid off the outside of the track and into the grass. As a result he fell to the rear of the TA class field. As he worked his way back thru the field toward his second place starting spot he suffered off track excursions on laps 8 and 14. In both cases he lost a spot or two but did not have to start all over at the back of the field. By lap 18 Allegretta was solidly in the top 5 and looking for more. Four laps from the end John Baucom spun his Ford and Vinnie slipped by to gain the second spot and that is how the race finished …
